BioI have been on the Internet since 1989. In the fall of 1989, I was introduced to a brand new Usenet newsgroup based on a series of books and short stories by Spider Robinson. I was one of the first dozen or so posters to “alt.callahans”. In the intervening years I explored a variety of communities: early IRC servers, MUDs and MOOs, other newsgroups (such as rec.arts.sf) and mailing lists. In 1992, I adopted the moniker Fantôme while spending far too much time on a variety of MUDs (including Nightmare), most based on the AberMUD source. When I graduated from university and moved out on my own, I continued using Fantôme for a while, but I started using my own name for a while—something I continue to do today. I have also emigrated from the United States to Canada, something I have never regretted. Although in the last few years I have not visited any of the Callahans' incarnations online, I do keep track of some folks who came to matter to me greatly. It is for this reason that I originally got a LiveJournal account; although I do not update often, I have definitely come to see it as a valuable forum and place to write.
